Lancaster Selected to Report BMIs to State
Recent changes to the New York State Education Law require that body mass index (BMI) and weight status group be included as part of a student’s school health exam. To calculate BMI, a student is weighed and their height is measured.
Each year, a sampling of schools are selected to report that data to the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), and this year’s reporting group includes Lancaster. The report is a summary of how many students fall into each weight percentile group, but does not include names or identifying information. The data are intended to help NYSDOH to improve student health programs.
If you do not want your child’s information included, please call his or her school nurse by the end of November. The report will encompass grades 1, 2, 5, 8, and 11.
