Fifth Graders are tested by NYS in Mathematics and ELA (English Language Arts). Our curriculum directly correlates with the NYS Standards. Be sure to check out the various links on our classroom website to help prepare students to be successful!
We will utilize NYS ELA Modules this year (go to www.engageny.com). We will focus on learning and applying strategies that make students good readers! Reading fluency and comprehension strategies will be practiced daily. Reading comprehension skills taught include: understanding fiction and nonfiction reading selections, identifying main ideas, sequencing events, recalling details, making predictions, drawing inferences, questioning, making connections and understanding cause-and-effect relationships. Students will use a variety of high-interest, age appropriate literature to enhance their desire to read. We will use novels, literature circles, book clubs, self-selected books, mini-reads, short stories, articles, poems, fiction and non-fiction texts and much more this year! Your child will be immersed in great literature!
Students will be given formal and creative writing topics to jump start their love for writing. Fifth graders continue to learn and practice the steps of the writing process. Students will utilize figurative language in the writing process. Peer conferencing is used as another revision technique. Proper grammar, spelling, and the mechanics of writing are taught to enable students to proofread and communicate more effectively.
In 5th grade, students continue to develop strategies to effectively use language. Through the presentation of informal reports and journal writing, they learn to write and speak for a specific purpose. Study skills include note taking, the use of reference materials, interpreting graphs and diagrams, and test-taking skills. Vocabulary development continues to include the refinement of phonetic and decoding skills. Word analysis strategies include: homonyms, antonyms, synonyms, analogies, and multiple meaning words. Students expand their vocabulary by learning strategies for identifying unfamiliar words.
What will my child do in Math? What if he/she is struggling?
Our district selected Math program is called Math Expressions Common Core (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt). Typically, we will begin with a mini-lesson (10-20 minutes of skill introduction and direct teaching). The InterWrite (Smart) board is often used during this time for practice. Students use their dry erase boards regularly to make sure that all students are actively participating in the lesson. After the mini-lesson, students will separate into 3-4 small groups or partner up to practice the skill. These stations often include hands-on practice, including computer and InterWrite technology and a variety of math manipulatives and games. This is also my opportunity to re-teach and meet with small groups or individuals that may need extra reinforcement of the skill. We usually close the lesson by applying the skill or skills they have learned in a real world situation (Math Menu). Homework is also discussed and assigned at the conclusion of the lesson. The next morning, the homework will be reviewed or collected. Every Friday, students will do our “Fast Facts” multiplication/ division routine (2 min. timed/ 50 facts) and Math Box Checkpoint. The IXL Math program and FASTT FACTS computer program are used each week to practice math computation and applications.
Our Math curriculum includes the following: Numbers and Operations in Base 10; Operations and Algebraic Thinking; Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division of Fractions and Geometry.
Our Science and Health curriculum includes the following: The Living Environment with an emphasis on Mammals; Rocks & Minerals; Environmental Factors/ Weather; The Sun, Earth & Moon; The Human Body Systems; Nutrition; Growth and Development; and Dealing with Feelings.
Yes, please check your child’s agenda planner and homework folder on a regular basis. The Red HW folder is a great communication tool for the parent-teacher team. If your child typically struggles with turning in assignments on time, you should be very diligent about checking on a daily basis. Also, be sure to initial your child's weekly Chip Count, which is also located in the folder every Friday.
I always encourage my 5th graders to come directly to me with any concerns, confusion or problems that may arise. This is truly the best way to get to the solution as quickly as possible. I will always have the best interest of your child at heart. Also, please feel free to contact me by phone, note, or email. Usually, once the facts are presented we can proceed as planned in a constructive manner most conducive for your child. I will always listen to both sides of the story and follow through on any disciplinary action set by our Code of Conduct. Bullying will not be tolerated!
We ask that you oversee the use of cell phones and social networking. More often each year we see many problems arise in the classroom due to issues within these forms of communication. If not taken care of in the home, they can become a disruption in the classroom which disrupts the educational momentum. Our motto for children that use this form of communication is: “Always present your BEST self and proceed with caution!”
- No information from children under age 13. If you are under age 13, please do not attempt to register for Facebook or provide any personal information about yourself to us. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under age 13, we will delete that information as quickly as possible.
- Parental participation. We strongly recommend that minors 13 years of age or older ask their parents for permission before sending any information about themselves to anyone over the Internet and we encourage parents to teach their children about safe internet use practices.
Please remember: Our WSS Code of Conduct states that cell phones are not permitted anywhere other than your child’s backpack or locker. If seen, the phone must be given to the principal for parent pick- up.
