• English 9 ELA Regents Course Description

I have taught 10th grade ELA my whole career and look forward to the exciting opportunity to teach 9th grade this year as well. My 19 year experience with the 10th grade course has provided me with excellent insight into what your children will need to be successful at the next level. I will do my best to prepare them for the coming years. It is exciting to me to meet students on their first day of high school and I hope to provide a wonderful experience as I help them navigate their freshman year.

The Literature selection this year will include the American classic To Kill a Mockingbird (I taught this novel my first 15 years in 10th grade) as well as contemporary literary classics like The Graveyard Book. Vocabularies will be expanded through novel reading, independent writing assignments based on selected texts, and regular vocabulary lessons. Critical thinking and communication skills will be required for essay analysis and response based on a variety of texts and genres including non-fiction, fiction, prose, and poetry. The ability to express onself effectively through writing and speaking will be a major point of emphasis in class this year.  A major research project will be assigned which will study claim development and analysis as well as utilize evidence-based writing to support claims. Basic grammar principles will be reviewed.
