*** This summer, you will need to closely read two titles as outlined below ***
*** Each requires the completion of a brief "proof of reading" activity assignment (120pts total),
but more importantly, you will need to be prepared to connect, discuss,
and share knowledge of these texts upon return to school ***
1) How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster 2014 (2003); This text has been the main foundation for all AP-Literary Analysis across the nation for about 10 years now, so do your best to get the gist and understand what you can... but I honestly don't want you to stress too much about understanding it completely. The "Proof of Reading" assignment (50pts) is to write a 1-2 Complete 12+ Word Sentence Rationale (explanation) for what 20 of 27 "Chapter Titles" represent. Number them 1-27 and list each "Chapter Title" (10pts)- THEN, include an Explanation/Rationale for any 20 of them (40pts).
2) The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck (1939); Please note for reading that this book has an unusual structure, with only 14 chapters that reveal the Actual Story Narrative (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 13, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, & 30), along with 16 alternating INTERCALARY chapters (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29). These intercalary chapters are short, inner, lyrical, & emotionally charged historical vignettes, which serve to provide pace-changing counter points & historical context that breaks up the Joad Family narrative. The "Proof of Reading" assignment is actually quite similar, BUT, this time you will start by COMING UP WITH A TITLE for each of the 30 chapters (30pts). THEN, you will need to write a 1-2 Complete 12+ Word Sentence Rationale/Explanation for 10 of your 14 Story Narrative "Chapter Titles", and also for 10 of your 16 Intercalary "Chapter Titles" (40pts).
Note: Be prepared to turn this material in on the first Thursday of our return in September, 1/8/22. We will also form "GOW Teams" and take a team GOW quiz soon after our return to school.
Happy Reading- Mr.H!
