Lancaster is home to a comprehensive, award-winning K-12 music program full of teachers and students who value the importance of music education.  We are fortunate to have the unwavering support of administrators, board members, and community members throughout our district.  For over 100 years, music and the arts have been an important part of Lancaster, and generations of families have benefitted from the strong music education offered in our schools.

Music Program Highlights:

  • Classroom music starts at the Pre-Kindergarten level
  • Recorder and violin instruction starts in Grade 3
  • 3rd-grade choir in every one of our elementary schools
  • William Street School is the largest, most comprehensive 4-6 music program in Western New York with eight bands, five choirs, and three orchestras. Extracurricular groups include: allegro club, a jazz ensemble, jazz combo, ukulele club, full orchestra, music composition groups, and chamber music ensembles.
  • Music education continues at the 7-12 grade levels with seven bands, four orchestras, and seven choirs. Numerous extracurricular opportunities include: several chamber ensembles, show choir, swing choir, a capella choir, drama club, marching band, winter guard, men’s choir, musicals, and dinner theatre ensemble.

Best Communities for Music Education Award

For seven consecutive years, the NAMM Foundation has recognized Lancaster with the Best Communities for Music Education Award. The award program recognizes outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community leaders who have made music education part of a well-rounded education. Designations are made to districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education.
