Longtime William Street School assistant principal Gregory Heer said he was committed to building upon the legacy of excellence at the school as he was named the school’s new principal.
“It’s been a privilege to work here in Lancaster,” Heer told the district’s Board of Education. “I’m proud to have served our students and families, and I look forward to continuing that service in a new capacity.”
During the board’s meeting on April 22, Heer praised outgoing principal Jacqueline Bull, who will retire at the end of the school year after two decades of service to the district. “I’ve been fortunate to learn from her leadership, wisdom, and unwavering dedication. I certainly have big shoes to fill,” he said. “I am committed to carrying forward the strong foundation she has built at William Street School, and to building upon it with the same passion and excellence.”
Heer has served as assistant principal at William Street School for 16 years, after beginning his service to the district as an elementary teacher. He will formally begin as principal on July 1.
Karen Marchioli, the district’s Director of Elementary Education, praised Heer for his work developing the school’s advanced mathematics curriculum, aiding the reconfiguration of the school through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, supporting professional development for educators in the district and across the region and creating a welcoming environment for students and families. “He brings a very calm demeanor to just about anything that happens in the school, he is thoughtful in his approach to his work, and has a steady presence that earns him the trust and respect of the students, the staff and the families,” Marchioli said.
Andrew P. Kufel, Superintendent of Schools, said that Heer’s work showed his care for the school and its development. “He works extremely hard and uses data to drive continuous improvement and builds strong relationships with faculty, staff, and students to really foster that culture that supports student learning,” Kufel said.
Michael Sage, Board of Education president, shared his appreciation for the school’s leadership through seeing his children’s time as students at William Street School. “The leadership Mr. Heer has shown this whole time is exemplary, and I can’t wait to see all the amazing things he does,” he said.
