Background

In 2015, student leaders spanning various academic programs initiated a comprehensive review of the class rank system by engaging stakeholders across the district. Their goal was to expand the recognition system to more students. Through collaborative committee efforts, research was conducted, and diverse perspectives on student recognition were explored. Following these discussions, a proposal was presented in the 2020-21 school year. In 2022, student leaders reviewed laude recognition options, ultimately selecting a system designed to honor achievements across a variety of academic pathways. As approved in 2020-21, and beginning with the graduating cohort of 2027, this updated recognition system will be implemented to celebrate the accomplishments of students at graduation.

What is Laude Recognition?

Laude recognition operates within an established framework that is widely accepted by colleges and universities, utilizing common terminology and standards. Our recognition system has been tailored to support students striving to meet the values, expectations, and initiatives of Lancaster High School and our community.

What is the Purpose?

Students are offered a multi-dimensional approach to recognition, allowing students to achieve distinction through various academic pathways. Our system ensures that performance is transparent and consistent for all students. Students will be encouraged to engage in genuine academic exploration, without favoring specific programs. Importantly, student recognition will be rooted in academic accomplishments. We believe students should be enrolled in courses that prepare them for their next step. It is also incumbent on schools to keep doors open for students as they explore their future options. Our system shifts the focus away from peer comparison and instead encourages students to appreciate their individual accomplishments while motivating them to achieve their own personal goals.
