Lancaster Middle School students and staff had a chance to play wheelchair basketball as they raised money for a local team.
The May 16 fundraiser for the Buffalo Rims wheelchair basketball team, in its second year, was held with a goal to match or exceed the $500 raised last year. This year's event was held with support from the school's new Climate, Culture and Inclusivity student committee.
Games for the Buffalo Rims wheelchair basketball feature teams of players with and without physical disabilities, with each player seated in a wheelchair during gameplay. Players are only allowed to push their wheels twice before they must shoot, pass, or dribble. Players must also remain firmly seated in their chair during play.
Teacher aide Elizabeth Keicher, who co-founded the Buffalo Rims team with her husband Chris, and whose daughter Emily plays on the team, said students learn about the value of inclusion through playing.
"Everybody has the same interests and desire to play at a higher level," she said. "It's all about creating opportunities for people with different abilities."
