A pair of Como Park Elementary third graders, Mya Conrad and J.J. Jordan, are being lauded for their artwork showing the resiliency found in the people of western New York.

“It's nice that children can recognize the effect that people can have on the community,” said art teacher Meri Tomasulo-Pellow. “That by saying ‘Thank you,’ you can make an impact, and you can show appreciation for the good things people have done.” 

The pair were named winners of a poster contest organized by The National Federation for Just Communities of WNY, Inc. The organization promotes understanding and respect among people of all races, religions, and cultures through advocacy, conflict resolution, and education. This year’s theme was “Community Healing,” celebrating those who have made a meaningful impact on the community through moments of adversity. 

Mrs. Tomasulo-Pellow said the students’ artwork was inspired by artist Jim Dine, and symbolized messages of love, kindness and gratitude for healers in the community. 

“They can send a message through their art, that even though they're not an adult, that they're not a professional artist, they can still inspire with their work,” Mrs. Tomasulo-Pellow said.

The students and their artwork will be recognized during the Community Healing Networking event held on March 16.
