Two LMS Musicals to be Presented Virtually March 5-6
For many students at Lancaster Middle School the start of the new year means that the annual musical is just around the corner. LMS Music Teacher and Musical Director Mary Beth Conlon was dedicated to finding a way to make musicals happen this year for her students.
Typically, the LMS Drama Club would produce a two-act musical with a large cast. This year due to social distancing constraints on the stage, Ms. Conlon decided two one-act Jr musicals would allow a similar number of students to participate and follow safety guidelines.
The LMS Drama Club will present “Into the Woods Jr” and “Once on this Island Jr” online on March 5-6.
When schools transitioned to remote learning in November, more precautions, like virtual practices and learning choreography at home were implemented so that students would be prepared leading up to the return to in person rehearsals.
There are also special restrictions for singing, which require 12-foot social distancing. Ms. Conlon had a solution for that as well. With the help of Glenn Bernardis from GB Audio, students prerecorded their songs and then Candlelight Productions filmed the performances separately while the students lip-synced.
“When creating the plan for this year’s musical I wasn’t sure how the students would receive the required “out of the box” changes. Not only were the students open to these new ideas, but they welcomed them with a smile and constantly remember to say thank you. It has been a joy to work with such a talented, hardworking, grateful group of students. I truly hope that our journey of Keeping Theater Alive in 2021 has made a lasting impression on their hearts like it has on mine.
This all shaped up to be two musical performances you will not want to miss. "Into the Woods Jr" will premiere at 7:00pm on Friday March 5 and "Once on this Island Jr" will premiere at 7:00pm on Saturday March 6. Both performances will be available on the Lancaster Central School District YouTube Channel.
