Child Safety Zones

Child Safety Zones are established by the Board of Education based on conditions that make it unsafe for students in an area to be transported according to established policies. In this case, alternative policies shall be established to make conditions safe for students boarding and disembarking buses. A Child Safety Zone is usually designated as such when two or more of the following conditions exist:

  • posted speed limit is in excess of 45 mph at pick-up point;
  • no sidewalks or shoulders exist on roads;
  • there is high traffic volume;
  • there are no traffic safety features, like signal lights, street lights or crossing guards;
  • there are railroad crossings near the pick-up point;
  • there is frequent road flooding in areas adjacent to a pick-up point;
  • the safety of the students on the bus as well as that of the student to be picked up or dropped off is a consideration;
  • the age of the student warrants the designation.
